Michigan Math & Science Teachers Network Hosts Workshop

Neil Hutzler and Joan Chadde of Michigan Tech will present a second Family Engineering workshop for the Michigan Math & Science Centers Network on January 27th. Twenty-two educators from around the state will gather in St. Johns, MI to learn about the Family Engineering program and how to conduct a Family Engineering event in their community.

The Michigan Math & Science Centers Network received $11,550 from Square One Education Network last fall, and recently received a second grant of $43,433 to help fund Family Engineering activities in the state. These funds have provided educators with two training workshops, 33 copies of the book, Family Engineering: An Activity & Event Planning Guide, 32 Family Engineering Program Starter Kits, and the opportunity for each center to conduct one Family Engineering event during February and March, 2012 to highlight STEM education in Michigan. Join Family Engineering at NSTA!

We’re heading to Indianapolis, Indiana, March 28-April 1, to spread the word about Family Engineering at the NSTA National Convention. Learn about hosting a Family Engineering event (and receive a copy of our book) at a pre-conference workshop on March 28^th, hosted by CESI (register here),hear how to engage children and families in the exciting world of engineering (March 29^th), see our hands-on activities up close and personal at the Elementary Extravaganza event and Informal Science Day Share-a-Thon on March 30^th, hear how college STEM students can be effective role models for kids using the Family Engineering model (March 31st), and visit us in the Exhibit Hall throughout the conference.

Family Engineering Night a Big Hit at Wauwatosa STEM School

Over 90 students and parents participated in Family Engineering Night at the Wauwatosa STEM School in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The evening began with a pasta dinner, followed by 90 minutes of hands-on activities from Family Engineering: An Activity & Event Planning Guide. The school is one of only two elementary STEM charter schools in the state and was an Intel® School of Distinction 2011 Finalist in the Math Excellence category. This was the third Family Engineering event at this site.

Volunteer Training Workshop for STEM Students

A third Volunteer Training Workshop for STEM Student Chapters was held at Michigan Tech, this time at the request of the National Society for Black Engineers (NSBE) Student Chapter. These students are planning to host a family engineering event in Detroit over their spring break.

Family Science & Engineering Night at Barkell Elementary School in Hancock, MI provided the opportunity for some of the newly trained Michigan Tech engineering students to share their enthusiasm and some Family Engineering activities with elementary students and families.
