Students and their families from Mari-Linn School in Lyons, Oregon enjoyed their first-ever “Family Science & Engineering Night” last month. Teacher Cathy Griswold spearheaded the effort, setting up hands-on activities in the school’s gym for the multi-generational participants to explore and enjoy. Read more

MTU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers in Grand Rapids

A group of six students from the MTU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers student chapter headed to Grand Rapids, MI on May 4th to make 15 presentations at Burton Middle School. The students reached nearly 500 students in Grades 6-8. They also met with Hispanic high school students to discuss college options and possible majors and careers. Joan Chadde, Education/Outreach Program Coordinator at the Center for Science, Math & Environmental Education at MTU has been ”coaching” this group of SHPE students for the past month to prepare for their presentations.

Uziel Mendez, the coordinator of this outreach effort and president of the MTU Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers student chapter, participated in a Family Engineering workshop held by Tau Beta Pi this past semester. Most of the participating SHPE students presented at Family Science & Engineering Nights held during the past school year. The MTU – SHPE students are now ready to reach out to Hispanic middle and high school students.

Family Engineering Night at Ontonagon Elementary School

More than five dozen elementary students and parents enjoyed hands-on engineering activities at a two-hour Family Engineering Night at Ontonagon Elementary School. The “Blast Off” activity was a favorite, with some students making their rockets propel more than 20 feet! Frequent comments heard from participants were to make the night longer and to offer even more engineering challenge activities!

AISES Workshop & Powwow

Sixteen members of the American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) from three colleges in the Midwest attended a Family Engineering Workshop held at Michigan Tech on April 13. The workshop was held as part of the AISES Region V Conference. Student participants came from the College of Menominee Nation (Wisconsin), University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and Michigan Tech, in addition to several high school students from South Dakota. The next day, the AISES students participated in a Powwow, while younger students took time out to enjoy some Family Engineering opener activities. Participants overwhelmingly believe FE supports their chapter’s outreach mission.
